Pep Guardiola has told Everton defender Yerry Mina his on-pitch actions are ‘not necessary’.

The Manchester City manager was clearly unhappy with a challenge from Mina on Erling Haaland. And Guardiola spoke to Mina at full-time after City’s 3-0 win at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Asked why he spoke to both Mina and Conor Coady, he said: “I admire Coady. With Mina it’s not necessary what he does, it’s not necessary.”

When Guardiola was asked whether it was specifically his actions towards Haaland, he said: “With everyone. It’s a football game, it is not necessary to do what he does every single game. I told him you are a good enough player to not do that.

“This is not about the physicality, not mental either. There are things that are not necessary to do and he does it all the time, with him, with Ayme, with Jack. Invite him to the press conference and ask him.”

City are top of the Premier League after the win over Everton, while Mina’s side are 17th, a point ahead of Leeds in 18th.
