Arizona State secured its first public commitment of the 2023 class on Friday in Israel Carter, a three-star quarterback from Centennial High in Corona, Calif.

Carter chose Arizona State over BYU, Colorado and Oregon. Per the 247Sports Composite rankings, Carter (6-1, 180 pounds) is the No. 47 quarterback in the class and the No. 74 prospect in California. According to 247Sports, Carter completed 60 percent of his passes for 844 yards and eight touchdowns last seaosn. He also rushed for 316 yards and eight touchdowns.

Arizona State's high school recruiting has slowed the past several months as the NCAA has investigated alleged recruiting violations within the program. The probe has resulted in the loss of five assistant coaches and others within the recruiting and personnel departments. But Arizona State got involved early with Carter and formed a solid bond despite the staff turnover.

Entering coach Herm Edwards' fifth season, the Sun Devils have five scholarship quarterbacks but have not yet settled on a starter. Florida transfer Emory Jones is scheduled to visit this weekend, so the position's present and future remains unsettled.

What does Carter bring to the Sun Devils?

Doug Haller, Arizona State beat writer: A dual threat, Carter provides quarterback versatility. As a passer, he has a solid arm with nice touch. He's also skilled in the zone read and dangerous when extending plays, a quality coaches covet. His commitment also may revive an old Arizona State pipeline. Previous Arizona State players from Centennial include linebackers Vontaze Burfict and Brandon Magee, as well as defensive tackle Will Sutton, a two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.
